Sprawling Housing Development in Brooklyn

Power has been restored to a sprawling Brooklyn housing complex after about an hour-long interruption Monday, federal officials say

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development said power was back at Starrett City in Spring Creek, a sprawling complex of nearly 50 buildings overlooking Jamaica Bay that is the largest federally subsidized rental development in the country, by 10:15 a.m. Monday.

It wasn’t immediately clear if every unit had been affected by the outage, nor was it clear if anyone had been trapped in elevators. Fire officials had said there were reports of people stuck.

The complex, which generates its own power, officially adopted the name Spring Creek Towers more than a decade ago, but is often still referred to as Starrett City.

In October, the building lost power in all 46 buildings for about two hours. There were also reports of people trapped in the elevators during that outage, though fire officials said no one needed to be rescued.

Calls to Starrett City management were not immediately returned.
