An off-duty NYPD sergeant apparently took his own life in Brooklyn on Sunday, police said.

The sergeant, identified by sources and neighbors as James Fitzpatrick, 48, who was assigned to the 84th Precinct in Brooklyn, was discovered in his Narrows Ave. home in Bay Ridge at 3:44 p.m., police sources said.

He was rushed to NYU Lutheran Medical Center, where he died from the gunshot wound to his head, police said.

The 24-year veteran officer had been out sick for several days before he used his service weapon on himself, police sources said.

 “I was inside the house and I heard the screaming and I came out and I saw all the police,” said neighbor Mark Pedziwiater, 44. “It’s a shock to everybody.”

It’s believed he used his service weapon, police said. The 24-year NYPD veteran and father of two had been out sick for several days before his death, police sources said.
