Espinal, 27, of New York City, told authorities he was a drug courier and that he asked LeRoy to accompany him on a December trip from New York to Sunrise to pick up 22 pounds of cocaine.
LeRoy’s job, according to Espinal, was to flash his badge if they got pulled over.
But the two were unaware that the deal was a sting operation orchestrated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Sunrise Police.
Before he was suspended from his job in December, LeRoy was a 10-year veteran with an exemplary record. He was named “Cop of the Year” at his precinct two years ago.
