Staten Island Overdoses Soar over 300 Percent

Staten Island had nearly the same rate of cocaine-overdose deaths as The Bronx in 2013, according to new Health Department data.

The Bronx — the city’s poorest borough — had 7.7 cocaine-involved deaths per 100,000 people, while mostly middle-class Staten Island was close behind, with 7.5 deaths per 100,000.

The data showed that overdoses among Staten Islanders soared 341 percent between 2000 and 2013.
