Donald Trump is thinking about running for president. Again. But this time, it looks like the real estate mogul whose name is attached to plenty of New York City buildings really means it.
“I am the only one who can make America truly great again,” Trump said today in a statement where he announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee, according to multiple media accounts.
Certainly, others who are gearing up to run in the Republican presidential race next year would take exception to Trump’s conclusion, but the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the host of NBC’s reality show Celebrity Apprentice isn’t shy with his belief that he’s the guy to get the job done.
“I have a great love for our country, but it is a country that is in serious trouble,” Trump said. Among the areas he thinks need improvements are the military, the U.S.-Mexico border, the nation’s infrastructure and, naturally, the economy. “Americans deserve better than what they get from their politicians, who are all talk and no action.”
Trump first expressed an interest in running for president in 2000, when he was considering mounting an independent run, as businessman Ross Perot did in 1992 and 1996. He seriously considered joining the GOP nomination fight in 2012, but ended up endorsing Mitt Romney. And he mulled a run for New York governor in 2014.
