Can The City Stop The Violence on Rikers Island?

19-rikers-island.w529.h352.2xThere’s no significant reduction in violence against inmates at Rikers Island even when the system came under recent scrutiny and criticism.

The New York Times reports its investigation identified 62 cases where inmates were seriously injured by correction officers between last August and last month. The report says that happens to be a point in time when city and federal officials were watching Rikers closely.

A report from the U.S. Attorney’s Office last year highlighted violence at the prison, and even threatened to sue the city.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says stopping the violence at Rikers is a top priority for him.

The city is now focusing on improving conditions in the section where underage inmates are held.

Officials say those improvements will be a model for the rest of the facility.
